speed sailing world record holder confirmed for fastnet
I am really excited to announce my co-skipper for this year’s Fastnet race will be Paul Larsen – the current holder of the World speed sailing record and a world class Ocean Racing sailor.
Paul’s experience is diverse and includes several world records, two circumnavigations and a recreation of Shackleton’s incredible journey from Elephant island to South Georgia. He brings with him a treasure chest of knowledge, a shared love of our incredible sport and a deep understanding of what it is like to create a campaign like mine from scratch and make it fly.
I am both humbled and happy that someone with Paul’s experience would want to race with me, a relative novice in the IMOCA class in an older generation boat and was a little perplexed as to why. However, after meeting with Paul and partner Helena (also with an impressive ocean racing CV) at the Poole Boat Show last week, both of their clear love of the sport, understanding of what a great racing the IMOCA fleet will provide for the Fastnet and their enthusiasm and understanding of my Vendee Globe journey seemed to explain it all.
The IMOCA fleet for the Fastnet this year is 28 boats strong, we are going to have some great competition and it will be a fast and furious race. At 600 miles the race is short enough to make it almost a sprint for one of these 60ft beasts and double handing with the king of speed is going to be epic. Prepare the Superbigou to fly.
I am Pip Hare. In 2020, I will enter the world’s toughest single-handed yacht race with the ambition of breaking the current female record. Over ten years of preparation have led me to this point and the journey has not been easy.

I have dedicated ten years of my life to gaining the skills required for racing a 60ft yacht around the world.
When the opportunity to charter Superbigou came up I knew I was physically and mentally reading for this remarkable race and so I grabbed the boat with boat hands and vowed to make it work. As with any international level sporting campaign we are working to secure corporate sponsorship to fund the main event and we are working hard to find the ideal partner.
With the boat in hand and an initial fund secured to cover commissioning and measurement our campaign is live - it’s a reality. To get to the start line I need to keep pushing forwards hard; racing, training and maintaining my boat, Superbigou, to ensure I get there this is where my crowdfund comes in.
Through my crowdfunding platform we are seeking to cover the boat running costs, allowing the campaign to gain momentum all the while becoming a more attractive proposition to our ideal corporate partner. Through personal donations we have already raised in excess of a phenomenal £12,700, which has covered allowed me to train, enter my first two races and helped fund race preparations. These donations are used to specifically cover my boats running costs, allowing me to work full time on delivering the competitive and exciting race I know I am capable of. To keep Superbigou racing and training, and my Vendee campaign on track I need to raise £4000 per month.
I am blown away by how generous people have already been and how humbled to have such support. We are having some great conversations with corporate sponsors, but all these meetings take time and in the meantime this crowdfund is making all the difference.
It might be a solo race, but there is a wealth of skill and experience working with me to make this campaign happen.

‘Pip has always impressed me with her can do attitude. Her sailing success to date speaks for itself but her curiosity to continuously learn and push new boundaries always inspires.
My only concern regarding her racing in the Vendee is that I can’t go with her. Which seems very unfair. I’ll be cheering and championing for her success all the way around knowing that she’ll smash it in true Pip like fashion.’
Campaign Board member Tom Hill serves as Chief Executive Officer of UBS Jersey at UBS Group AG. Tom is an accomplished sailor and first met Pip at a sailing regatta in Jersey. As part of the campaign board Tom will provide governance and guidance on the funding and financial elements of Pip’s campaign.
“I am delighted to be involved in this campaign, which is a major event in British single handed offshore sailing. Pip has a tremendous record in numerous races, the tougher the better, achieved through amazing strength of character, and the Vendee entry comes at the ideal time in her career.”
A 24,000 mile race, circumnavigating the world, alone. 60 ft high performance racing yachts.
The world’s most elite offshore racers.
The earth’s most hostile environments.
Since its inception in 1989, fewer than 100 international skippers have completed the race. By comparison, that is less than 3% of the total number of people who have climbed Everest! (5000 climbers)
Only 5 women in history, and fewer than 10 British skippers in total have ever finished the race.
