This week I bought my 60ft IMOCA yacht Superbigou back from France to my home port of Poole - and I sailed it single handed.
The trip was incredible, it was daunting to sail this 60ft racing machine alone and I fielded more than a few challenges along the way. I arrived in the UK, tired, aching, cold, wet and totally in love with my boat. I have got a lot to learn about sailing a 60fter alone, I have many hurdles to jump before arriving at the start line of the Vendee Globe but I was made to sail this boat. Video highlights of the delivery can be seen here.

This week has also seen significant media interest in the five female competitors racing single handed in the IMOCA class. Read the articles here.

Last year I secured my boat and resourced the initial take-over funding to cover measurement costs for the boat and set-up of my campaign. Going forward I have a commitment of £4000 per month to keep my boat afloat and the campaign wheels in motion. This amount covers charter fees, mooring and insurance. I will be working hard over the first half of 2019 to find commercial sponsors. During this period, I am hoping to meet my running costs through crowdfunding, allowing me to work full time, training and finding the right sponsorship partners.
My fundraising goal of £54,000 represents running costs through to August 2019, by which time I hope to have secured a great sponsor. By donating to this campaign, you will be gaining a very real stake in one of the most elite sporting events on the planet and helping to put a British female athlete on the start line. Through my crowdfunding platform and via private donations we have already raised in excess of a phenomenal £11,000, which is one fifth of my fundraising target. The money raised so far has covered the boat running costs for the first two months of my campaign.
All donations will make a difference and be used to specifically cover my boats running costs, allowing me to work full time on delivering the competitive and exciting race I know I am capable of.
It might be a solo race, but there is a wealth of skill and experience working with me to make this campaign happen.

‘Pip has always impressed me with her can do attitude. Her sailing success to date speaks for itself but her curiosity to continuously learn and push new boundaries always inspires.
My only concern regarding her racing in the Vendee is that I can’t go with her. Which seems very unfair. I’ll be cheering and championing for her success all the way around knowing that she’ll smash it in true Pip like fashion.’
Campaign Board member Tom Hill serves as Chief Executive Officer of UBS Jersey at UBS Group AG. Tom is an accomplished sailor and first met Pip at a sailing regatta in Jersey. As part of the campaign board Tom will provide governance and guidance on the funding and financial elements of Pip’s campaign.
“I am delighted to be involved in this campaign, which is a major event in British single handed offshore sailing. Pip has a tremendous record in numerous races, the tougher the better, achieved through amazing strength of character, and the Vendee entry comes at the ideal time in her career.”

Since its inception in 1989, fewer than 100 international skippers have completed the race. By comparison, that is less than 3% of the total number of people who have climbed Everest! (5000 climbers)
Only 5 women in history, and fewer than 10 British skippers in total have ever finished the race.
